I am finally doing it! Yep...unmounting my wood stamp babies.
I have been working on unmounting my wood mount Stampin Up sets this week. I watched a video by Cindy McVey at Crazy For Crafting and I was so tickled to see this easy way to complete my icky chore! I just grab a couple sets while watching a TV show and this project I have been dreading is finally on track!
I found this video online that really gave me a DUH moment. If you remember a while back I showed you this big ole roll of ezmount that I was going to use to unmount/mount my stamps...until I watched that video online..
So here I go.........
Carefully peel off the stamp...you can loosen it a wee bit with you heat gun and or 5-10 seconds in the microwave will do as well. I did not have to do either so far.
I am tickled to find this process...I love being able to see the image of the stamp! Cindy suggests taking each set and putting them back into their original box to dry so nothing gets stuck to them while they are drying.
15 sets DOWN.. many more to go...I will show you how they all look when I am done...someday LOL!

So here I go.........
One of my first stamps....year 2000
the stamp is off!
Peel off the label...slowly and carefully
Here it is....pretty sticky!
Flip your label so it is backwards and line it up to your stamp. This way works particularly well with words!
Stick the stamp back to the back of the label.
Adjust label to align with the stamp.
There we go!
Trim off the excess label with some small, sharp scissors
All trimmed
. Buy some Aleene's Tack-It Over and Over...a repositional glue
Add to your stamp
Oops too much, it takes only a wee bit. A nice little foam brush would have come in handy!
Smooth out a thin layer of glue and let set over night to dry.
Ta-Dah...all done and ready to use with your acrylic blocks!

ReplyDeleteInteresting stuff... lovin the idea.. I find a problem with storage though as they can get bent or dented if not in cases, and I would need just SOOOOO many cases!!!!

Interesting technique - but I love my wooden stamps, despite the space it would save. But the time it would take me .... no, think I'll stick with no room!

Couple of times I've been frustrated with positioning wooden stamps but this just seems slightly like sacrilege!
ReplyDeletelol...I've wanted to do that for years, but DH says he likes walking in the back door and seeing my stamps on the wall... you go girl! How are you going to store them now? Just curious! Hugs...
ReplyDeleteooohooooo chalk or finger nails scrapping down a blackboard!! when I hear about peeling off the rubber from wooden stamps. I don't think I could do that to the few Penny Blacks I have, but! I can see that it would be easier to store them!

must admit don't have oodles of wood mounted stamps but admit to them taking up about 4 drawers in my titchy desk so I may just give this a go.

WOW! I have taken most of mine off wood but I have been buying the craft foam or the EzMount thin and that stuff is about $5 for an 8-1/2x 11 inch sheet. Very expensive. I think I will give this a try! How often do you have to redo the glue? Thanks for sharing! Vickie #46

That’s something I’ve been meaning to do to my wood backed stamps for a long time too but kept putting it off.

Great tutorial Sue, I have some unmounted rubber stamps that I need to mount as they don't have the foam or anything.... not sure about my beloved wooden stamps yet, but I'm suspecting you've got way more than me anyway!!!

ReplyDeleteThank you for the tip. Never heard of Tack-It, but I found some at Michaels today. The Stampin'Up clings do not cling very well so I am adding Tack-It to those also and converting my SU wood stamps to cling. Thanks again for the idea.
ReplyDeleteBeen working on demounting my stamps this way. Started about three yrs ago. It is a huge space saver. I keep mine in the stampin up storage boxes that they sell their clear stamps in. You can buy them empty, Qty of 4 I think gor about 5.00. They then go on some shelves.

ReplyDeleteI just finished un-mounting all my wooden stamps using your tips. They took up two very large draws. I'm loving the convenience of having all my stamps together on one shelf within easy reach. Most of them fit in empty Cd cases that I purchased over time at goodwill and yardsales. The larger sets I purchased clear cases from Stampin-up 4 for 6$. There is also a PDF download for Stampin-up stamps for labeling your new cases on Pinterest.
ReplyDeleteIt works great! Thank you so much for the tip. Even though the space you save is great, the big issue is being able to use my wood stamps with my Misti. I had pretty much quit using my wood stamps because of a bad tremor in my hands. I was never able to get a clean, straight image. Now I'm able to use them all again (and I have a lot) and get perfect images. I understand the reluctance to take apart those great wood stamps, but for me it was do that or keep them as decorater items, the choice wasn't difficult, I love using my stamps again. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI am with Bonnie on this. I have a Stamp Perfect, and find it so much easier to work with my stamps. Before it, I would not use silhouette stamps, now I get great results since I can re-ink until I am satisfied. whether it be rubber or clear stamps. I hate the ridge that can happen when the wood mounted ones get rocked or pressed too hard, and you can't re-ink if it is not dark enough. Progress. Thanks for the confidence to do it.
ReplyDeleteJust an FYI. I used the Tombo multmulti purpose glue on several Stampin up rubber unmounted stamps (SU calls them "clear" stamps and the have the image on clear vinyl you put on the back). I spread a thin layer all over the vinyl. I found that the vinyl curled up and they are a mess. Now I just spread a couple of very thin lines of the Tombo and let it dry. It is just enough to get them to stick. Happy stamping!
ReplyDeleteThis tutorial is amazing! Thank you for sharing! I have started to convert my wood stamps to cling mount. My challenge is getting the label off. Will the microwave help for that? I have been hesitant to try for fear of fire. Is this safe? Some labels are hard to see over the wood. Thank you in advance for your advice. 😇
ReplyDeleteYes I used the microwave for a few seconds just to loosen sand melt the glue. Maybe 7 seconds. Didn't have to do it on all of them tho. Thanks!
